Where your first ten visitors come from
Not search, not ads, not an audience. Ten specific people who reply beats a thousand strangers who bounce, because a thousand strangers tell you nothing about why.
There is a page now. The instinct at this point is to think about traffic: search, ads, social, an audience. All of that is real and worth learning properly. None of it is what you need this week.
What you need is ten of the right people to look at the page and tell you what happens. Ten specific humans beats a thousand random visitors, because a thousand strangers who bounce tell you nothing about why.
Where the first ten come from
- The twenty people you already spoke to. They know you, they described the problem to you, and they are owed a follow up. This is the warmest list you will ever have.
- People who asked you for help in the past.
- Communities you already belong to, where you are a member rather than a visitor.
- Direct outreach to people who match your buyer, one message at a time, written for them.
Notice that all four are manual and none of them scale. That is correct at this stage. You are not building a traffic machine, you are buying information, and the cheapest way to buy it is to go and ask.
The follow-up message
To somebody who gave you fifteen minutes, the message almost writes itself, and it works because it is true.
Hi Dalia. You told me in May that stock ordering eats about six hours of your week. I went and built something for exactly that and I would like your opinion on it before I show it to anyone else. Here is the page. Does this look like something you would actually use, and if not, what is missing?
It refers to what they said, it credits them with having shaped it, it asks for judgement rather than money, and it ends with a question that is answerable in one line. The question matters: open-ended requests for thoughts get no reply, while a specific question gets a specific answer.
On posting in communities
Read the rules, then follow them. The fastest way to waste the only community that contains your buyers is to arrive and advertise. If you have been a member for a while, say what you built and why, and treat it as a conversation. If you joined yesterday, you have not earned a post yet.
What tends to be welcome, even in strict groups: answering a question in your area properly, with no link at all. Posting what you learned from twenty conversations, as a finding rather than a pitch. Asking for criticism of something specific. What is not welcome, anywhere, is a launch announcement from a stranger.
If you have no community, join one now and spend a month being useful in it before you need anything. That sounds slow because it is, and it is the reason to start before you need it rather than the week you do.
What to watch
With ten visitors, analytics will tell you almost nothing. You are looking for replies, not numbers. Specifically, for each person: did they understand what it was, did they recognise the problem as theirs, and did they ask a buying question.
Three different failures hide behind the same silence. They did not understand it. They understood and it is not their problem. They understood, it is their problem, and something about your offer is wrong. Only asking will separate them, so ask.
What to do with the replies
Put every reply in one place, in the sender's words, and resist acting on any single one. A list of ten is a dataset. A single reply at eleven at night is a mood.
- Anything said by three or more people is a fact about your offer. Change the offer.
- Anything said once, however forcefully, is one person. Note it and wait.
- A question asked repeatedly is a missing section on your page. Add it where they asked it, not at the bottom.
- Praise with no question attached is the least informative response you will get. Enjoy it and discount it.
Work to do
- Send the page to ten specific people, one message each, written for that person. No group email.
- For each one, ask a single question: does this look like something you would use, and if not, what is missing?
- Write down every reply in their exact words, including the awkward ones, especially the awkward ones.
- Mark anything that three or more people said. Those are the only ones to act on this week.
